Penseurs is composed of several old computers, each relentlessly computing random instructions in a form of blind introspection.
Penseurs est composé de plusieurs vieux ordinateurs, chacun plongé dans un calcul composé d'instructions aléatoires, dans une forme d'introspection aveugle.
This project stemmed from the metaphor of the monk meditating in his mountain, or the old philosopher deep in his thought. The question is "how could this archetype be transposed on a computer, what would there be left of it, and what would the machine fail to reproduce ?"
These computers are generating random computer instructions, and try to execute them. Most of the time, the execution fails, and the screen displays a never ending litany of various errors.
Ce projet naît de la métaphore du moine qui médite dans sa montagne, ou du vieux philosophe en profonde réflexion. La question est "comment transposer cet archétype sur un ordinateur, qu'en resterait-il, qu'est-ce qui se perdrait ? "
Ces ordinateurs génèrent des instructions numériques aléatoires, puis essayent de les exécuter. L'immense majorité du temps, l'exécution est invalide, et l'écran affiche une litanie sans fin d'erreurs variées.
At some point though, one of the computers is bound to piece together a string of instructions that makes sense, but what this string of instructions will do once executed is unpredictable. It might display an image, play a sound, connect to the internet, or remove some critical file and corrupt the whole system. Even though it is only a machine, the Penseur will discover something.
À un moment donné, l'un des ordinateurs finira pourtant par générer une suite d'instructions valide, mais il est impossible de prédire ce que ces instructions feront. Une image pourrait s'afficher, un son se faire entendre, l'ordinateur pourrait se connecter à internet, voire même supprimer un fichier critique et provoquer un crash du système. Bien qu'il ne soit qu'une machine, le Penseur découvrira quelque chose.
